The first records of the use of these systems go back more than 2,000 years, when Egyptians used cylindrical willow baskets full of small stones to protect the banks of the River Nile from erosion. Officine Maccaferri was the first to undertake industrial production of gabions in 1894. Since then Maccaferri has undertaken improvements to gabions and other mesh products in order to fullfil increasing demands from customers requiring the use of modern technology in order to protect the ecosystem.
Together with our wide range of geosynthetics (e.g. geotextiles, geogrids, sub-surface sheet and strip drains, and turf reinforcement mats) we lead the market in the innovative application of these products.
