Traditionally woven mesh Gabions are used to construct mass gravity retaining walls. They are however also used as free standing structures where no active soil pressures are present. Typically, when these walls are above approximately 2m in height, internal columns in the form of steel or concrete are required to maintain the verticality of the Gabions. A competent structural engineer will need to design the columns and footing details.
In Australia, a 5.5m high entrance feature structure with internal columns has been constructed this way.
