Newly constructed embankments or cuttings generally require surface protection to prevent soil loss due to runoff. The installation of either biodegradable or permanent erosion control products will help to mitigate the effects of this sheet or concentrated runoff.
Generally for low flows and temporary erosion protection until vegetation is established a Biodegradable ECB is generally used. A secondary function of this type of blanket is the promotion of the germination of the seeds due to moisture and temperature being maintained within the topsoil structure.
For more concentrated and higher velocity flow conditions a Permanent TRM erosion mat is recommended to provide root zone reinforcement so the vegetation can sustain higher shear stresses that would exceed the limits of mature, natural vegetation.
